Prior to the verses I am about to discuss Jesus just got finished with telling everyone He was the light of the world. the pharisees had something to say about that.
John 8:13b
"You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true."
Jesus replies by implying that He is no ordinary man.
John 8:14
"Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. "
I think Jesus was saying, you don't know who I am.
John 8:15
You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.
This is referencing Jesus' current mission, not that he does not judge at all. as it says in John 3:17: "For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him." To condemn also means passing judgment.
John 8:16-18
16 "Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me. 17 In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. 18 I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me."
Just because He was not sent here to judge does not mean He is unable to do it. He didn't judge because He had put Himself in a position not to but He could and if He did it would be the Father's judgment too and when He does, there will be no questions, no excuses, it will be completely righteous because of what Jesus says in John 3:
John 3:19
And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.
John 8:19
They said to him therefore, "Where is your Father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also."
This is obviously a reference to Jesus' Divinity, and the Triune nature of God.
John 8:20
20These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.
I love this. God is sovereign, so nothing will happen to Jesus until His time. They tried to stone Him, throw Him off a cliff, mob Him, and every time He just walks away. Walks Away!
What I get away from this passage is God is mission oriented, He knows what He wants to do, and exactly how He wants to do it. Also, God is sovereign, not only does He know exactly how He wants to do something, He does it that way. He orchestrates the nations, the whole world follows His commands without even knowing. For personal application know that He has a plan for you, He wants you to mature and grow. Do not worry about tomorrow (it's a sin) as long as you keep His commands He will guide you to exactly where you need to be.
